A quiz is one multiple-choice question on the canvas. The facilitator starts it, everybody picks an answer before the time runs out, and the reveal shows the right one.
Setting one up
Drop a Quiz from the Ask category, one of the six Collaborate categories. It arrives with a sample question so you can see what it does. To write your own, press the … at the top of the circle and choose Edit Question…. The Edit Quiz dialog takes the question, two to six answers (up to 80 characters each, with Add Answer for more), the Correct one, and a Time Limit from 10 seconds to 2 minutes (20 seconds unless you change it). Press Save.
Double-clicking the quiz never edits its text: the dialog is the only way in, so nobody can reword the question mid-round. Editing isn't offered while a round is running.
Nobody sees the question or the answers until you press Start: the closed circle shows only a question mark, how many answers there are and the time limit, so the room cannot read ahead while you are still talking.
Running a round
Press Start. The question moves into the middle of the circle, the answers fan out around it, and a ring around the question counts down the time.
- Editors and anyone on a Participant pass press an answer to pick it. Their own pick is marked You; pressing a different answer moves it, and pressing the same one again takes it back.
- The circle shows how many people have answered, never what they picked.
- Lock Now closes the round early, for when everyone is in.
When the time is up the answers stop taking presses and the circle says Time's up.
The reveal
Press Reveal Answer (you can also reveal straight from an open round). The right answer pops out in green, the others fade back, and every answer shows how many people picked it, with their avatars beside it (up to five, then "+N"), so you can see at a glance who got it right. The middle of the circle keeps the score ("3 of 5 correct"). Run Again clears the picks and closes the card for another round. The … menu also has Reset, which does the same at any point once a round has started.
If somebody is facilitating, editing, starting, locking, revealing and resetting are theirs; everybody else can still answer. When nobody is, any editor can run it.
Worth knowing
- The right answer is saved in the document like everything else on it, so it is hidden on the card, not secret. Don't use a quiz for anything that matters if someone peeks.
- The countdown runs on each person's own clock, so a computer whose clock is a few seconds out locks a few seconds early or late.
- Visitors on a Participant pass answer like editors; on a Viewer pass they can watch the round and the reveal but cannot answer.
- Saving an edit resets the round, because picks made against the old answers no longer mean anything.
- Picks aren't undoable, and somebody else's Ctrl+Z can't un-start your round.
- Only the circle is the element's body: drag it to move the quiz. The empty corners of its square behave like bare canvas, and pressing an answer only ever picks it.
