A card shows one item on a board. The same item can sit on more than one board, and a change to it shows everywhere at once.
Add a Card
- + Add card at the foot of a column (or of a row, on a board with swimlanes) opens Add a Card: press a type (Project, Task, Note, Idea, Action or your own) and a card of it lands at the end of the column and opens straight away with its title selected, ready to name.
- With the keyboard: focus a card and press N to open Add a Card for its column.
- Off any board: the New Card (+) button in the bottom-right strip makes a card of any type without placing it on a board.
On an empty board, the first column's button reads Add your first card.
A board shows and offers only the card types set in its menu's Supported Cards; cards of other types are hidden on it, not deleted. A card dropped into a row takes that row's assignee, priority or field.
Open a Card
Click a card (in Plan mode), or double-click it in the other modes, to open its panel. It closes with Escape or the close button, and every change saves as you make it.
- The header: the card's type (change it from the picker), its number, the ⋯ menu (Duplicate, Flag, Archive, Trash, Edit Card Type, which opens the card's type in the type editor, and Help, which opens this page) and the close button.
- On the left: the title, then the card type's tabs (Overview by default) and their fields. The description is rich text: bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, size, colour, headings, links, and bullet or numbered lists, from the toolbar over it or the usual shortcuts. It reads as text until you click it.
- On the right, in Details: status, assignee and parent, then priority, labels, estimate, due date and, on a project, start date (a start after the due date says Starts after it is due). Labels are coloured chips, with the document's labels offered as you type. Open beside a parent takes you to it. At the foot: who made the card and who last changed it.
- A checklist shows its progress ("2 of 5"); tick steps, edit them in place, and Add a step.
- Linked as Parent: a project lists the cards under it (the cards whose Parent is that project) on its first tab, each with its number, title and status. Click one to open it in the same panel, or New Task to make one already under it. Trashed cards are left out; an archived one shows an Archived chip.
- Find your way back: as you move from a card to its parent or a child, the top of the panel keeps a breadcrumb of where you have been. Click a card in it to go straight back. It shows the nearest three (one on a phone), with earlier ones folded into …. Opening a card from a board starts a new trail.
- The ⋯ menu holds Duplicate, Flag (or Remove Flag), Archive (or Restore) and Trash.
On a phone the panel rises from the bottom, with Details as its first tab and the breadcrumb on a row of its own. You can assign a card to yourself or to the members of your teams; a guest can assign only themselves. A Participant's ⋯ menu offers Duplicate and Flag but not Archive, Trash or Edit Card Type; a Viewer opens cards to read them, with only Help in the ⋯ menu.
Flag a Card
Flag (in a card's right-click menu or its panel's ⋯ menu) marks a card for attention: it shows a red flag at the end of its title on every board it is on, and Flagged beside its number in the panel. Flagging changes nothing else about the card; Remove Flag takes it off.
Comments
Every card has a conversation at the end of its Overview tab, the same comments you leave on the canvas:
- Add a comment in the box and press Comment (or Cmd+Enter, Ctrl+Enter on Windows); a plain Enter starts a new line. Type @ to mention a teammate on a team document: they get an email whose button opens the card, and the card's thread shows on their Inbox.
- Resolve closes the thread once it is settled; it then shows Resolved, and Reopen opens it again, as does a new comment.
- Delete your own comments from their bin. Someone who can edit the document can delete any comment.
- Editors and Participants can comment on a card; a Viewer reads the comments but can't add one.
- A card shows how many comments its open thread has, beside its votes. Whether the count shows is part of the card type's Display (Card Types).
Trashing or archiving a card keeps its comments; deleting it for good from the Trash deletes them. Comments are not undone with Undo, as on the canvas. A card holds up to 200 comments.
Right-Click a Card
Open, Duplicate (a copy right after it, without its votes), Add to Slides, Edit Card Type, Move to each of the board's other columns that the card's type allows, Flag, Archive, and Trash. A Participant or a Viewer gets Open alone. A face-down card on a board that hides writing has no menu.
A Card on the Canvas
Drag a card off a board and it stays on the canvas as a Plan card, showing the same item. Move it like any other element. Double-click it (double-tap on a touch screen) to open the card; a single click just selects it.
Its element menu has a Card section with Card Size: Minimal, Compact or Detailed, the same sizes a board uses for its cards. Its card type's Display decides what shows at each size.
Find a Card
The Cards button in Plan mode's bottom-right corner (beside Card Types) lists every card in the document that isn't archived or in the Trash, of every card type, your own included, newest change first:
- Search by number (
12or#12), title, description or a type's name (Person finds every Person card). - Add Filter, at the right of the search box, narrows the list by any field, Card Type included: pick a field, then one of its values (each says how many cards have it), such as State: Done or Assignee: No assignee. Each filter shows inside the search box; add up to eight. A filter's cross takes it off (so does Backspace in an empty box), and the box's clear takes off the words and every filter.
- All Cards and Not on a Board switch between every card and the ones no board shows, on any tab: the strays a renamed or removed column left behind, or cards of a type every board with their status leaves out.
- Click a card to open it. Someone who can edit can move a card to the Trash from its bin without leaving the list.
The Trash
Every way of deleting a card moves it to the Trash: Trash in its menus, Delete on a focused card, or dragging it onto the Trash button at the start of the bottom-right strip (it opens out into a drop target as you drag). The button's badge counts the cards in it. On a phone there is no Trash button, so use Trash in a card's menu (hold your finger on the card).
Open the Trash to Restore a card to the column it came from, Delete one for good (it asks first), or Empty Trash (which empties it at once, without asking). Deleting for good can't be undone. The Trash button is only shown to Editors.
Archive a Card
Archive takes a card off every board without deleting it, keeping its status for when it comes back. An Archive board shows every archived card; Restore, or dragging it onto another board, brings it back.
Present a Card
Add to Slides adds the card to the Slide Deck; presenting it shows the card full screen, kept up to date as it changes.
